Some baked sweet potatoes are superior than others, and these are simply ideal. These baked sweet potatoes are silky-smooth all the way through. They’re sweet, buttery and delectable.
Baked sweet potatoes are always a pleasant side dish. They also make a wonderful weekday entrée if you garnish them well. You’ll discover several of my preferred flavor variations below.
In my baked sweet potato recipe trials, I was astonished to discover so many parallels to baked potatoes. It’s simple to group sweet potatoes (commonly called yams) and potatoes together, but they originate from distinct plant families. They’re only distantly related, but I’ve realized that they do bake up similarly.
Both are finest baked in the oven without foil, directly on the tray, at moderate heat. You’ll learn why and discover the complete recipe below!
How to Bake Sweet Potatoes
For a long time, I thought I didn’t like sweet potatoes. When I was growing up, I only ever had them in casserole form, smothered in marshmallows and brown sugar. Turns out, I adore sweet potatoes, but I have to prepare them the correct way! I like mine plump, with caramelized edges and a crusty exterior. Here’s how I create them:
Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil.
Use a fork to puncture incisions into the sweet potatoes, and set them on the baking sheet.
Roast for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the skin has swelled up and you can easily penetrate them with a skewer.
The most essential point to note here is that I DON’T enclose them in foil. If you do, the sweet potato flesh will still roast, but the exterior will be very moist and almost gelatinous. In order to get exquisite, puffed up golden skin and caramelization on the outside of each roasted potato, position them onto the baking tray nude!
If you’re in a haste, you can also roast sweet potato halves for 30 minutes. Slice the potatoes in half longitudinally, coat them with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and sauté cut-side up until faintly caramelized and tender.
3 Baked Sweet Potato Stuffing Suggestions
1) Irresistibly fundamental
Season with salt and pepper, add several pats of butter, and conclude with a scattering of minced scallions or green onion. Add a dollop of sour cream or sprinkle of grated Parmesan if you’re in the mood. Inspired by my Savory Mashed Sweet Potatoes.
2) Southwestern
Top with minced red bell pepper and green onion, black beans, crumbled feta or shredded Monterey jack cheese, toasted pepitas (green pumpkin seeds), avocado and/or a dollop of sour cream. Inspired by my Black Bean Sweet Potato Enchiladas.
3) Sweeter but not too much
Top with pats of butter, toasted and finely chopped almonds, a light sprinkle of fresh minced rosemary (trust me) and a light trickle of maple syrup (or sprinkle of brown sugar). Season to flavor with salt. Inspired by my Pecan Sweet Potato Casserole.

Oven Baked Sweet Potato Recipes
Of course, an ideal baked sweet potato with butter, salt, pepper, and a scattering of scallions is wonderful, but your options for baked sweet potato recipes don’t end there. To make one into a complete supper, I like to load it with a flavorful vegetable filling and a delicious marinade. Find my 4 fave fillings for loaded sweet potatoes here, or select the picture below.
If you’re serving your oven baked sweet potatoes as a side dish, serve them with your preferred protein or vegetarian chili. For a garnish, keep to butter, Greek yogurt, or sour cream, or try adding a dollop of cilantro lime vinaigrette, tzatziki, chipotle sauce, pesto, guacamole, or a drizzle of tahini sauce.
If you have leftover baked sweet potatoes, save the tender interior for another recipe. I combine it into the frosting of my vegan chocolate cake, convert it into a delectable Alfredo sauce, use it to bond quesadillas, or incorporate it into hummus!
What temperature is a broiled sweet potato done?
If you'd like a more precise indicator, insert an instant-read thermometer into the thickest part of the sweet potato. The internal temperature of a cooked sweet potato should read between 205- and 212-degrees Fahrenheit.
How often can you consume broiled sweet potatoes?
Because of their elevated sugar levels and high vitamin A content, you can likely enjoy them in moderation about two or three times per week. Eating these vegetables too often could lead to too much vitamin A intake or increase the potential for negative effects on your blood sugar.
